Rising Brisbane talent Tomboy enhanced her record to four wins from eight runs when she scored a brilliant win at Doomben on Wednesday.
A member of Robert Heathcote’s powerful Eagle Farm stable, Tomboy made it back to back outstanding Brisbane wins when she strolled home to win by a widening three and a half length margin.
With Heathcote in Canada on holiday, stable foreman Melissa Leitch was left to represent the stable at Doomben.
“She has always shown well above average ability and we haven’t been surprised with her past couple of wins,” Leitch reported.
“But in saying that she couldn’t have been more impressive. She was still able to go away and win easily after covering ground at her past couple of runs.”
A daughter of Murphy’s Blu Boy, Tomboy was originally purchased from the draft of Baerami Thoroughbred for $10,000 at the 2009 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale by Shaun Dwyer.
The former Brisbane horseman is now based at Bendigo and she was initially put into training there before heading back to Victoria after being injured.
“She is still owned by the same group and they still have horses with Shaun. I know she (Tomboy) showed Shaun good ability – but apparently she was hurt when she played up in the tie up stalls.”
“Her owners sent her up to Queensland to have a break and they decided to leave her up here and they have her to Rob.”
“She’s been a bit of a hot headed filly and she’s taken a good deal of time to settle down – but she is much better now.”
Since joining the Heathcote stable, where she has been for all of her race starts, Tomboy has quickly established herself as one of the most progressive fillies in the state.
“She’s won four of her eight starts and she’s been unlucky in a couple of others – she could easily have won six of her starts.”
Tomboy ($1.90 fav) raced clear over the concluding stages to race away from her rivals. The second horse home Our Triple Treat ($10) was three and a half lengths behind.
Sophie’s Spirit ($4.40), jumped the third favourite, and ran third, a further half length behind the runner-up.
Connections have a good opinion of Tomboy – a filly they feel is up to stakes class.
“Definitely. She’s always shown she’s got the ability. I don’t doubt she could measure up (to stakes races).”
Leitch said Tomboy was showing no sign of her recent performances affecting her condition.
“She’s loving her racing. At this stage will race next in a QTIS three-year-old race over 1500 metres at Eagle Farm on July 23.”
“She’s not a QTIS horse but she will be well suited in three-year-old company,” she added.
Tomboy is a daughter of former Queensland juvenile sensation Murphy’s Blu Boy and is from the unraced Jeune mare Tomber.
Tomber, who is a daughter of the Group Three winning juvenile Autumn Leaves (Salmon Leap), is a three quarter sister to the Melbourne and Adelaide group winner Autumn Jeuney.
It is also the family of the Perth Cup winning the WA Derby placed Crown Prosecutor – a winner of seven races and over $400,000.
