Tasmania roared early on Melbourne’s Super Saturday card when quality filly Triple Asset edged out Metonymy in an all Magic Millions finish to the Group Three Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m).

A last start winner of the Shaw Magic Millions Tasmanian 2YO Classic at Launceston, Triple Asset sat on the speed throughout and in a thrilling finish won the race by a nose.

Winning trainer and part owner John Keys was thrilled with the performance and suggested the filly would stay in Melbourne for another feature stakes race.

“This is something special,” Keys said.

“We come here hoping, we didn’t know for sure how we’d go.”

“We thought we’d give it a scare, but I didn’t know if we could win or not.”

Winning rider Michael Rodd couldn’t help but be impressed with the winning performance from Triple Asset.

The pair started their partnership by accident, literally. Triple Asset’s regular rider Lincoln Coffey was due to ride her last start in the Tasmanian Magic Millions Classic but was stood down earlier in the day after breaking ribs in a barrier incident.

Rodd picked up the MM Classic ride and the pair combined for the easiest of wins in the feature juvenile event.

The Melbourne Cup winning rider said he was delighted with how the filly handled Flemington’s straight straight at her first run outside her Island state.

“Some come off the bridle probably about the 450 (metre mark) just through not knowing what to do, probably waiting for a turn or something like that,” Rodd said.

“But once I sort of gave her a rub up with the stick she picked the bridle up.

“Every time a horse would challenge her she’d keep sticking her head out, so she’s got plenty of guts and she’s got the right attitude.”

“It’s been a month between runs since she’s come here and it’s a bloody good effort,” he added.

A graduate of the Whishaw family’s Armidale Stud, Triple Asset was purchased by connections for $28,000 at last year’s Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale at the Inveresk Showgrounds.

As it stands she has already won her jubilant connections over $180,000 – and now being a stakes winning filly it makes her an extremely valuable commodity.

Triple Asset, a daughter of Blue Diamond Stakes winner Nadeem, is now the winner of three of her six starts.

Yet to miss a place in her career, Triple Asset is one of two winners produced by the twice Brisbane placed Hennessy mare Caralowe.

Caralowe is a half sister to the winning and stakes placed Redoute’s Choice mare Bold Selection.

Further back hers is the same family as Golden Slipper winning sire Marauding and fellow stakes winners Springsteen, Latin News, Voodoo Beat and Biscalowe.
