Champion trainer Gai Waterhouse notched a third win in the $1 million Gold Coast Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) at the Gold Coast today when Sweet Idea led throughout for a popular win.
One of the fancied runners, Sweet Idea was able to cross from an outside gate and control the speed and kick away from her rivals in the home straight.
Estonian Princess tried hard in the straight to run second and race favourite Enquare was third, but they were no match for the winner.
It was the third win on the day for Waterhouse after winning earlier in the day with Driefontein and Whittington.
“She’s a very good filly,” Waterhouse said. “She was a high class two-year-old who ran second in a Magic Millions (Classic) and then third in the Slipper.”
“She’s been at the top level for a long time and she’s just such a talented galloper.”
“For a top two-year-old, she has come back better as a three-year-old. She keeps on improving all the time.”
Former AFL star Campbell Brown is a part owner in Sweet Idea and he was a happy man in the winner’s circle.
“It was a super win,” Brown said. “We were a little bit concerned as she hadn’t run 1400 metres before but she came out and blew them away it was fantastic.”
“Anyone who knows me will know it’s going to be a big night tonight,” he added.
Sweet Idea was purchased by Gai Waterhouse and James Harron for $240,00 from the draft of Arrowfield Stud at the 2012 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
She is raced by a large team of owners including local brothers and well known racehorse owners David and Luke Henderson.
The connections spent $200,000 buying Sweet Idea’s full sister at the Gold Coast Yearling Sale and she will be joining the Waterhouse stable soon.
Sweet Idea is Waterhouse’s third win in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas, following success in the race in 2002 and 2003 with Ha Ha and Biaggio respectively.
One of three winners for the stakes performed Timber Country mare Flidais, Sweet Idea is a daughter of former outstanding Magic Millions graduate Snitzel.
Flidais, a winner over 1850 metres, earned black type with a third placing in the Group Three Adrian Knox Stakes and as well as Sweet Idea she is the dam of the Singapore based group performer Rush.
It’s a family Waterhouse knows well as she also trained Sweet Idea’s second dam Electronic – a former classy performer who won nine races including the two at Group One level in Sydney.
