The winning run of the Dale Sutton stable rolled on at Flemington today when former top class three-year-old Wind Shear won the $125,000 listed Auckland Racing Club Handicap (1600m).
In his first preparation since a gelding operation, Wind Shear sat off the speed and flew home in the straight to reel in the leaders and then race clear for a deserved stakes success.
Tylden horseman Dale Sutton is having his best ever season as a trainer and Wind Shear has long been a stable favourite.
“He’s always been a pretty good horse,” he noted. “He ran second in a Magic Millions (3YO Trophy) and wasn’t beaten far when third in a Sandown Guineas.”
“We’ve been wanting to step him up in ground and today looked an ideal race for him with the drop in weight.”
“This is his first preparation since he’s been gelded and it’s sort of turned him around.”
Sutton said the recent operation had assisted in the racing manners of Wind Shear of recent times.
“He’s still the same at home, but at the races we’ve noticed a difference with him. He’s settling a lot more in his races.”
Sutton said he had nothing else picked out as yet for the son of Flying Spur.
“I hadn’t looked ahead – we had him in the race yesterday and after he drew bad we decided to come here instead.”
“He’s won this and that is great,” Sutton summed up.
At the post Wind Shear ($8-$9) held a widening length and three quarter margin over the on speed runner Excelltastic ($4.40-$6.50).
Another half length back in third place was Delayedreaction ($6-$7), a breath ahead of the consistent Georgia’s Boy ($5-$6-$5.50 fav).
Winning rider Stephen Baster was delighted he was able to nab another stakes race for the Wadham Park operation.
“It’s fantastic,” Baster beamed. “He’s been my favourite horse for a long time.”
“And this is the first time I’ve won on him. It’s been a while between drinks for the boy – so it’s great to get him over the line.”
“He’s settling really well now and with the 53.5 I thought he was a really good chance today.”
Hailing from the family of Golden Slipper winner and star sire Marscay, Wind Shear is the only foal produced by the Sydney winner and Gosford Guineas fourth placegetter Kajar.
She in turn is from the winning and city placed Kenmare mare Persian Bazaar – a full sister to the Silver Slipper winning sire Kenfair.
Further back it is the same family as Melbourne Cup hero Subzero and New Zealand Oaks heroine Alacrity.
