Storm Burst will be sent to the paddock with black type races in mind after a narrow, but impressive win at Sandown this afternoon.
Sent out at extremely short odds following a runaway win last time out at Cranbourne, Storm Burst came back from what looked to be certain defeat to win in good style.
No sooner had the Danehill Dancer filly skipped clear of her rivals in the straight, than the lighter weighted Melted came storming home down the outside of the track.
Showing great fight, Storm Bust fought back, regained the lead and edged clear, much to the delight of her connections and a large band of punters.
“It was a good tough win,” winning trainer Peter Moody said. “The other horse (Melted) was the one to beat and at the weights I certainly had concerns about it.”
“It was a good gutsy effort and with the weight different it was probably better than it looked.”
Moody said today’s race was a bit of a bonus – as he planned to send her for a break following her previous Cranbourne win.
But he decided to give her a chance at being a city winning juvenile prior to the break and she did the job.
“I think she might be a nice horse in the autumn. She’s got good upside – she’s a good doer.”
“She might be back in late spring for a little campaign – but I think in the autumn she will be worth chasing better races.”
Winning rider Luke Nolen, who like Moody will be a premiership winner in Melbourne at the end of the season, also predicted a nice future for the well related filly.
“She’s a winner. All of her runs this time in have been good.”
“She didn’t win with the ease she did last time – but with the handicap conditions she was weighted up to her best but still won.”
“She might have got a bit complacent. I think she will make a nice autumn filly – there’s plenty of upside.”
Moody knew of the good ability of Storm Burst and went to the Gold Coast to the recent Magic Millions National Yearling Sale and went to $200,000 to secure her three quarter sister from the draft of Redbank North.
That filly is a daughter of Fastnet Rock and she was one of the top priced lots at the auction.
Moody purchased Storm Burst herself from the same ring for $60,000 at the 2009 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Coolmore Stud.
By the same sire as Private Steer, Choisir and Light Fantastic, Storm Burst is from an Oaks and Derby placed daughter of Thunder Gulch.
Storm Fille, her dam, won two races at two and trained on to finish second in a WA Oaks before an excellent third in the WA Derby.
A winner of over $150,000, Storm Fille has produced three winners including seven time victor Greatwall of China.
She is also a half sister to the five time stakes placed Suave Dancer mare Chestnut Dream.
It is also the same family as kiwi stars Maze and Penitentiary and their Aussie based half brother Barlinnie.
