Solid Selling Continues As Clearance Rate Soars

The clearance rate soared as demand for quality continued today on day two of the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

A colt by Exceed and Excel and a filly by Fastnet Rock shared the top selling honour on the day when they were both knocked down for $400,000.

During an unprecedented day of selling, the cumulative sale average soared to 88.44 per cent, while the average remained ahead of last year’s figures at the same stage of the auction.

Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox said he couldn’t have been happier with how the day unfolded.

“It is quite incredible,” Cox said. “With a clearance rate sitting at 88.5 per cent it is quite astounding.”

“We have a job to do, which is to get as many good horse as we can in the sale and then sell them as best we can and hope that the vendors are happy with what they are geting and buyers are equally as happy to purchased whatever price that may be.”

“We have a very good team in the Bloodstock Department that do a lot of work, led by Barry Bowditch. Full credit to them, it is a very even bunch of horses and the market is telling us that.”

Young New Zealand based bloodstock agent Glen Harvey joined forces with renowned horseman Paul Moroney to buy a well bred daughter of Fastnet Rock for $400,000 from the draft of Newgate Farm.

The filly is the second foal of the group winning Giant’s Causeway mare Awesome Planet and was presented at the auction by Newgate Farm on behalf of Western Australia’s Gold Front Breeding operation.

Co-buyer Paul Moroney said the filly ticked many boxes and we was thrilled to join with Harvey and buy the filly.

“We absolutely loved her,” Moroney said. “I thought she was probably the best filly of the sale on pedigree and type.”

“She’s a lovely athlete who stood over ground. Whatever she looks like now, in another twelve months she’s going to be a big, strong filly.”

The other yearling to share top billing today was Burnewang North Pastoral’s Exceed and Excel colt from Dubai Dream who sold to Sun Bloodstock for $400,000.

“We see that the pedigree is very good,” Sun Bloodstock’s Australian CEO Alvin Lui said. “We see him as a potential stallion.”

The colt’s new trainer Gai Waterhouse was thrilled to have been selected to prepare the youngster.

“I’m very excited,” she said. “He’s an extremely precocious horse, very fluid when he walks. He’s very nicely put together.”

“Mr Kong from China is an owner of mine and he had the horse that won the other day, Fighting Sun. He’s excited about the sale and why wouldn’t he be.”

“It’s a very strong sale, but there’s great value,” Waterhouse summed up.

The third top price of the day was the $390,000 traded for the Fastnet Rock-Black Minx filly from Newgate Farm, who acted as agent for Victoria’s Morning Rise Stud.

Segenhoe Stud signed for that attractive filly, the second foal of the multiple stakes winning Lonhro mare Black Minx.

The demand for youngsters by leading first season sire I Am Invincible continued and he leads the sire table for three or more sold with an average price of $254,000 – a hefty price considering they were conceived off an $11,000 service fee.

The formidable Gai Waterhouse/James Harron partnership heads the buyers list with a total spend so far of $3.98 million on 22 lots.

The third day of the sale, with an outstanding line up of lots on offer, will be held at the Gold Coast Sales Complex from 11am (Qld time) tomorrow.
