Perfectly handled from the front by star local rider Jim Byrne, Redzel travelled sweetly throughout and found plenty when challenged by his rivals including stablemate Russian Revolution in the straight.
Counterattack was the best of the others at the post, running a closing second, while Derryn finished third.
Byrne said the lightly raced four-year-old gelding gave him a great ride throughout and he knew he was the horse to beat approaching the turn.
“He’d raced really good through this preparation,” Byrne said. “You can see he has gotten stronger and stronger.”
“This was always going to be a nice race for him and despite a couple of little speed hiccups during the race he was able to get it just soft enough.”
“I knew coming to the turn, passing the 400 (metre mark) that if I could hold him together just that little bit longer he was going to make it difficult (for the others).”
Redzel, one of four stakes winners on the day for Snitzel, is trained by Peter and Paul Snowden who were not surprisingly thrilled with the victory of the stable favourite.
“Full credit to the horse,” co-trainer Peter Snowden said. “He’s come a long way.”
“To see him a race like this – he just deserves it. He’s so honest and he deserved every bit of it,” Snowden added.
Redzel carries the familiar red colours of the Chris and Michael Ward’s Triple Crown operation and the successful syndicators boast a share in their star sprinter.
The Ward brother spotted Redzel at the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale where he was offered by Marquee Stud. They bid to $120,000 to secure the future Group One winner.
Today’s win was the seventh for the son of Snitzel from just 17 starts. Along with five minor placings he’s earned his big syndicate of owners almost $1.2 million.
A half brother to the group winning sire Danerich, Redzel is from the Sweet Embrace Stakes winner and Golden Slipper placegetter Millrich.
Millrich is a full sister to the unraced mare Rubimill (Lot 818), a proven stakes producing mare who is catalogued for the upcoming Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.
Rubimill currently has four named foals for three winners including the Eskimo Prince Stakes winner and twice Group One placed El Roca. She heads to the sale ring for Edinburgh Park after being served in the spring by Pride of Dubai.
Other Magic Millions graduates to shine on a big day’s racing included fellow stakes winners Debonairly and Cantbuybetter for connections from the United Stakes and Toowoomba respectively.
