Real Surreal will be set for the Golden Slipper after making Queensland racing history in winning today’s $2 million Jeep Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast.
The filly, beaten just once in four starts, scooped over $1.47 million with the win – the highest pay out in Queensland racing history.
Passed in as a yearling from the Robyn Wise draft with a $75,000 reserve, Real Surreal has now earned over $1.59 million in a case of the one that got away for buyers.
The filly was retained by breeder Michelle Lang-McMahon and ownership shares were taken up by her mother Glenys Lang and their stable manager Holly Williams.
Being full owned by females, the filly was eligible for the $500,000 Magic Millions Racing Women initiative and collected a $325,000 bonus along with the race prizemoney of $1.14 million.
Classic third placegetter Missy Longstocking ($100,000), fourth placegetter Global Dream ($50,000) and ninth placed Greytfilly ($25,000) also collected bonuses from the world first scheme.
The win capped a big day for Eagle Farm trainer Kelso Wood following the second placing of stable star Sizzing in the $1 million Gold Coast Magic Millions 3YO Guineas.
“It’s been 25 years since I won and lost the last one (Magic Millions Classic), but I’m not going to lose this one,” Wood said.
“I was a bit concerned when they straightened up. I was hoping we’d be coming down the outside.”
“He got a good passage through and put an end to it.”
“She’s got a great finish. She’s a great filly. She’s going to make a beautiful three-year-old.”
“She’s always shown me plenty of ability,” Wood added.
Winning rider Michael Cahill said after getting back in the field he was able to gain a run when required.
“I was back in a position where I just had to wait,” he said. “Coming to the turn I had enough room to improve which I did.”
“The further we went, the better she felt. It was just a matter of her gaining a clear passage from the turn on.”
“There was a bit of a tight passage I had to take. As I just got to it, it widened up a bit and I was able to take advantage and go through.”
“I was confident I had the race won prior to getting there.”
Cahill said the Golden Slipper was a sensible aim for the Real Saga filly.
“She’s a very good filly,” Cahill said. “She’s a filly who’s got better with each of her runs.”
“If she continues to improve you’d be not sure how far she goes.”
“You’d definitely go to Sydney. She’s in great hands. She has such a calm temperament.”
“She’s a little disadvantaged in these races by getting back but she can certainly finish,” Cahill summed up.
A daughter of former explosive Tale of the Cat stallion Real Saga, Real Surreal has enhanced the impressive breeding record of her dam Stolen Beauty.
By Mossman, Stolen Beauty won over 800 metres and is a half sister to three stakes gallopers including Todman Slipper Trial winner Great Crusader.
At stud Stolen Beauty has produced three named foals, all of them winners – two of them already successful at black type.
As well as Real Surreal she is the dam of the Group Three Vo Rogue Plate winner and Queensland Guineas runner-up Benny’s Buttons.
The win lengthened the first season sire lead for the Glenlogan Park based sire Real Saga. Watch out for more yearlings by the sire offered at Magic Millions Yearling Sales over the coming days and months.
