Madame Pommery proved a fitting winner of the Group One feature on Caulfield’s traditional Ladies Day when she upstaged a quality field in the Thousand Guineas (1600m) this afternoon. |
Owned by 20 women across Australia, Madame Pommery skipped across the wet track, scoring a soft win over Revolutionary Miss as Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduates ran 1-2. The Chris Waller trained daughter of No Nay Never benefited from a clever ground saving ride by James McDonald to score a length and a half success. Waller’s Assistant Trainer and Racing Manager Charlie Duckworth said he was almost lost for words after the brilliant win. “She got a gem of a ride,” Duckworth noted. “She did no work early and she let down pretty impressively.” “It’s incredible (for her) to take out a Group One – massive credit to the filly and it’s just awesome to be a part of it.” “She’s obviously an exciting prospect. It’s an all ladies syndicate and I’m a bit speechless really. Sophie (Baker) and Steph (Waller) put 20 ladies together hoping to run in the Magic Millions (2YO Classic) and now they’ve taken out the Thousand Guineas.” “It’s above and beyond expectations. I think they would have all been happy to have a winner at Kembla or Geelong on a Thursday. To win here today is mind-blowing.” “She was almost a freebie,” Duckworth said of the $150,000 purchase price. “She’s obviously worth a whole lot more than that now, and she’s won a lot more than that now so it’s really exciting.” The win provided champion Sydney based jockey James McDonald with yet another big race success. “Tim (Clark) took me to the right part of the track and then my filly was classy enough to get the job done,” McDonald said post race. “Chris has had a lot of faith in this filly.” “He asked me to come down and he said she would be hard to beat. He was quietly confident.” Waller and Guy Mulcaster went to $150,000 to secure Madame Pommery from the Coolmore Stud draft at the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.”Chris and his team with Sophie, Charlie and Guy, who buys the horses, they selected her and put a ladies syndicate together and for their first horse, they couldn’t have wished for a better start,” McDonald said. Madame Pommery emulated Magic Millions Racing Women flagbearer Global Glamour by winning today’s Thousand Guineas and joined the likes of Group One winning all female owned graduates Foxplay, The Mission, Sunlight and Montefilia. The first Australian Group One winner and sixth overall for her sire No Nay Never (Scat Daddy), Madame Pommery is one of three winners for the Exceed and Excel mare Cancel. Cancel, a two time winner at 1000 metres, is a full sister to Group One Blue Diamond Stakes winner Earthquake and half sister to stakes winners Pandemic and Palomares. Originally raced by Godolphin, Cancel was sold for $300,000 at the 2016 National Broodmare Sale to James Harron Bloodstock before being on sold for $400,000 at the same sale two years later and purchased by the Coolmore Australia team.
