Those purchases and the sale of 255 lots for almost $45 million on a big day’s selling saw a record day’s gross for Magic Millions at any auction in the company’s history.

The average price of $176,143 was up on last year’s smaller session while the clearance rate was an excellent 85 per cent.

Presented by Bhima Thoroughbreds on behalf of Peter and Sarah Moody, Nurse Kitchen was the pin up act with her sale for $1.7 million.

A winner of the Group Two Moonee Valley Fillies Classic and a close runner-up in the Group One Vinery Stud Stakes, Nurse Kitchen was knocked down to Michael Wallace for the China Horse Club.

“Obviously she is a filly that we think has great racing upside,” Wallace said. “She looks easily capable of winning Group One races if everything went her way.”

“She’s already a Group Two winner and Group One placed by Savabeel, so she will always have a high value regardless.”

“But we definitely feel there is racing upside in her,” Wallace added.

For Peter Moody, who bred and raced the filly, the $1.7 million sale was a great result.

“We always held her in very high esteem from her very early days,” Moody said.

“It’s a dream result. We need those. She’s a filly that Sarah and I bred and Sarah ultimately raced with David Brideoake and they did a tremendous job with her.”

“We’ve got mum and the full sister weanling at home so it was time to cash in and move on and let’s hope the full sister can do the job for us,” Moody added.

Two other lots on the day sold for $1.15 million – the maiden mare Petits Filous and the young Group One winning broodmare Soriano.

Petits Filous was offered in the race filly and maiden mare supplementary by Glastonbury Farms, as agent, and was purchased by Sydney based bloodstock agent James Harron.

“She’s just a beautiful sort,” Harron said. “We spend a lot of time going through the catalogue and looking for those really good fast mares who we think will make good broodmares.”

“Speed and precocity are a big thing for us – it’s how we select and then good looks and she was a beauty.”

“She can go to any stallion. It’s a real beauty contest out there and if she can produce foals like her I think we’ll do really well with her.”

The other $1.15 million seller came late in the day when the multiple Group One winner Soriano was offered by Dormello Stud and purchased by Yulong Investments.

Soriano, a winner of nine races, was voted the Champion Middle Distance Horse of New Zealand in 2014-15 and won the Zabeel Classic and Herbie Dyke Stakes, both at Group One level.

A daughter of Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate and Cox Plate winner Savabeel, Soriano was presented in foal to Tavistock and is a full sister to Saturday’s Brisbane Group Three winner Kaiser Franz.

Other high priced lots on the day included fillies and maiden mares Catch a Fire ($950,000 to Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings in the US), Scarlet Rain ($950,000 to James Harron Bloodstock) and Lankan Rupee’s three quarter sister Inspired Estelle ($925,000 to China Horse Club Racing Pty Ltd).

With 85 per cent of lots offered sold, the day boasted an average of $176,143, up from $163,645 for the corresponding session last year. No fewer than 23 lots sold for $500,000 or more during the day.

“We’re sitting on a gross just under $45 million which I think is a record day’s gross for Magic Millions at any sale,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox said.

“That is a staggering figure is anyone’s language. We are just delighted, obviously with the quality of horses we offered today and the competition was here from all parts of the globe.”

“It’s been a very rewarding day all round. I think what really stood out was the competition right throughout the day.”

“We are sitting on a clearance rate of 85 per cent which is just fantastic particularly when you are offering 300 mares,” Cox added.
