Most Husbands gave the locals plenty to cheer about when he stormed home to win the $50,000 Magic Millions Summer Handicap (1400m) at Ballarat on Sunday.
Off the speed for much of the race, Most Husbands showed a blistering turn of foot over the concluding stages to reel in the favourite Skawboard Pressure and win brilliantly.
At the post the Darren Weir trained runner held a two and three quarter length margin over the Peter Moody prepared favourite.
Strato Mostro, for Jason Warren and Ben Melham, worked home solidly to run third, a further long neck back. Cross of Gold, the second elect, was fourth home.
Proven big race rider Steven Arnold was impressed by the acceleration shown by Most Husbands when called upon in the straight.
“Ideally we wanted to be a bit closer today,” Arnold said. “But he just wanted to find his feet.”
“He had a big kick when I released him at the furlong – a real big kick and put them away quick.”
“I was a little bit worried mid race that they hadn’t gone that quick, but he travelled in good and he was nice and relaxed in the run.”
“I was a little bit surprised how well he kicked. But up over the seven (furlongs) he had a good kick.”
Arnold said the gelding, best known over the shorter course, would be capable of running a strong mile provided he relaxed in his race as his did today.
The win was the third in 12 runs for Most Husbands and his earnings have shot to over $70,000.
Most Husbands is by Testa Rossa, the sire of yesterday’s stakes winner There’s Only One.
He was purchased for $47,000 by Darren Weir from the draft of Lakeview Stud during the sixth session at the 2010 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
He is one of five winners produced by his dam, the winning Celestial Dancer mare No Say.
A daughter of Miss Sandman and thus a half sister to top Queensland sire Show a Heart, No Say is the dam of the smart Singapore based stakes performer Won’t Stop – who is also by Testa Rossa.
From six runners, No Say has produced five winners and a placegetter. All of her winners are multiple winners.
