More Joyous continued her march to a clash with So You Think in the Cox Plate after scoring a record breaking win in today’s Group One Toorak Handicap at Caulfield.
Sent out the warm favourite after a string of feature race wins in Sydney, More Joyous made the transition to Melbourne and did it in style.
Carrying the biggest weight to victory in the feature handicap for a mare in history, More Joyous showed great acceleration late in the race to beat We’re Gonna Rock and Poor Judge.
“Well she really was impressive,” winning trainer Gai Waterhouse beamed shortly after the win.
“About a furlong and a half out I thought there’s no way in the world we’re going to pick up this weight and get past them.”
“I just love the way she grittily just came at it and came at it and the the last 50 metres said done, I’ve got it!”
Waterhouse said the four-year-old daughter of More Than Ready would now tackle the runaway Yalumba Stakes winner in the Cox Plate.
“You’ve seen the two who will be the main contenders for the Cox Plate and both have been extremely impressive.”
The win was yet another Group One success for one of Australia’s most famous thoroughbred families and turned the attention to her outstanding yearling half brother.
The yearling in question, a colt by Redoute’s Choice, is the latest from More Joyous’ dam, the Oaks winning Sunday Silence mare Sunday Joy.
The colt is an outstanding individual and is being prepared by Strawberry Hill Stud for January’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
More Joyous is now the winner of 10 races and has earned over $1.35 million with nine stakes victories.
Her dam Sunday Joy won three stakes races in three different states including the Group One Australian Oaks at Royal Randwick.
She is a daughter of Queensland Oaks winner Joie Denise – the dam of four stakes gallopers including super mare Tuesday Joy (7 wins and over $3.2 million).
