Magic Millions graduates dominated on Toowoomba’s biggest raceday with Poor Judge, Yield Curve and Miss Imagica winning the three feature events.
Poor Judge continued the dream run for local trainer Norm Hilton when he scored a runaway win in the time honoured Weetwood Handicap.
The Royal Academy gelding, purchased by Steve Brem for $130,000 at the 2007 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale,
Hilton, a trainer for 30 years, had never been to his feature local meeting – but today he was there and saddling up the winner of the $150,000 feature sprint.
“I always stayed away because you couldn’t move the crowd was so big,” Hilton told AAP.
“This is a big thrill for me,” he added. “I picked this race out for the horse after Chris (Munce) said he would win a serious race when he won on him two runs back.”
Poor Judge ran the 1200 metres in a course record time of 1 minute 12.04 seconds – and his winning margin was five and three quarter lengths.
Munce, a proven big race rider, was impressed with the win of Poor Judge.
“He certainly deserves his chance at the better races,” he told reporters.
“He was far too good today and he keeps taking the next step. It will be interesting to see how he performs against the better horses.”
Earlier in the day Yield Curve scored the biggest win in the training career of Kath Carroll by winning the listed Toowoomba Cup (2100m).
A granddaughter of former top horseman Con Doyle, Carroll fought back tears as she waited for her seasoned campaigner and Shane Scriven to return to scale.
“This is an emotional win for me,” he told AAP. “It’s amazing and the thrill of a lifetime.”
The win was the second in the race for Scriven who won back in 1983.
Yield Curve, a six-year-old gelded son of High Yield, is now the winner of 13 races and he’s placed on 18 other occasions from 74 starts.
He’s earned over $300,000 – not bad considering he cost just $40,000 at the 2005 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
Yield Curve cruised to the line two and a quarter lengths clear of his nearest rival in the $100,000 feature staying contest.
And the winning run of exciting Queensland first season sire Hidden Dragon continued when promising juvenile Miss Imagica won the $150,000 QTIS 600 2YO Plate (1300m).
A member of the Michael Nolan stable, Miss Imagica is now unbeaten after two runs and has earned her connections a staggering $116,500.
Miss Imagica, who is from the Shedad mare Imagica, cost just $14,000 from the draft of Lyndhurst Stud at last year’s Magic Millions QTIS 600 Yearling Sale at the Gold Coast.
The race result was a clean sweep for not only Magic Millions graduates but also for first season sires.
The runner up Equissential ($30,000 purchase) is by Jet Spur and the third placegetter Cavaliered ($90,000 purchase) is a juvenile by Ferocity.
