History was made on Sunday when for the first time the judge couldn’t separate two runners in the Group One Penang Sprint Trophy in Malaysia.
Eagle and Blue Tosca hit the line locked together in the R500,000 feature dash and a photo finish failed to find a margin between the duo and a dead heat was declared.
Eagle, a son of Clangalang, is prepared by former Irish horseman Thomas Gillespie and was ridden by Jackson Low.
Meanwhile, Blue Tosca, by Canny Lad, is prepared by popular trainer Stephen Cook and was partnered in the Sprint Trophy by Martin Wepner.
Both winners were purchased as two-year-olds at the Magic Millions National Horses in Training Sale – the number one breeze-up style sale in Australia.
Cook took a shine to Blue Tosca when he was offered at the 2007 edition of the National Horses in Training Sale. The youngster was prepared for the sale by the Strong and Hayden team.
A year later rookie Malaysian trainer Ooi Chin Chin purchased Eagle for just $5,000 from the Nolen Racing draft of the same popular Gold Coast based auction.
“It’s interesting how both horses ended up in Malaysia,” Blue Tosca’s trainer Steve Cook reported.
“I came to the sale in 2007 and bought Blue Tosca for $20,000 and my assistant trainer at the time was Ooi Chin Chin. He really enjoyed the trip and saw the nice horses that was offered.”
“Training is his own right he came back the next year and he bought Eagle (for just $5,000). Eagle is now trained by Thomas Gillespie.”
Blue Tosca is by Golden Slipper winner and popular Bletchingly sire Canny Lad.
He is the sole winner to date for his dam, the Sydney winning Desert King mare Desert Bride.
He hails from the family of international stakes winners including Festival Hall, Hymn, Salsa Inglesa, Dragonet, Re Thong, Violeiro and Sydney group winner Dreamscape.
Blue Tosca boasts the impressive race record of seven wins and nine placings from just 22 runs and R545,492 in earnings.
Eagle, meanwhile, is by Clang’s AJC Derby and Doncaster Handicap winner Clangalang – one of two stakes winners for his sire.
His dam, the once winning Casual Lies mare Unbeatable, is a three qiarter sister to two New Zealand based stakes performers and half sister to triple stakes winner Kaptive Jewel.
Further back his pedigree includes Group One winners Librici, Procol Harum and Cannsea.
With seven wins and eight placings from 24 runs, Eagle has earned connections R727,629.
