Grand sprinter Cataputed won a seventh stakes race on Saturday when he led home a stable quinella in the listed Doveton Stakes (1200m) at Caufield.

Racing for the first time since May’s The Goodwood, Catapulted settled off the speed and fence before coming with a strong run in the straight.

So quick did he accelerate under regular rider Michael Rodd, the he established a three length margin over stablemate Undeniably when the finish line was reached.

Trainer Mark Kavanagh, who purchased Catapulted for $90,000 from the Mill Park draft at the 2007 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, was thrilled with the performance.

“Catapulted has been a marvellous old sprinter,” Kavanagh said. “He’s mixed with the best, he’s come up every year and he always gives everything to you.”

“He’s got a great first-up record. We left a fair bit in the tank with him because we wanted him right for Standish again this year.”

“He might be underneath those spring carnival horses but he is too classy for these sorts of horses so he’s always going to be up in the weights.”

Kavanagh said Catapulted, who is part owned by wife Isobel, was a stable favourite having won group races in Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane.

A son of Danehill’s Golden Slipper winning son Catbird, Catapulted was bred by the Watson family’s Mill Park in partnership with good friends Bob and Helen Dinham from Adelaide.

He is one of three winners produced by the once winning Umatilla mare Siren Miss.

Siren Miss, who is from a Godswalk mare, is a full sister to stakes winner Umatune (the dam of Jestatune and two other stakes performers) and stakes placegetter Godswaki.

The latest yearling from Siren Miss, a lovely Flying Spur three-quarter sister to Catapulted, will go under the hammer at January’s Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Catalogued as lot 243, the filly is one of nine quality youngsters in the draft from South Australia’s Mill Park.
