Atlantic Jewel emerged as the horse to beat in the upcoming Spring Carnival feature fillies events when she scored an arrogant win in the Italian Sports Club of Werribee Plate (1200m) at Moonee Valley today.

The final margin for Atlantic Jewel ($4.40-$5-$4.60 eq fav) over Sharnee Rose ($8-$11) of three quarters of a length could have been many times that as Michael Rodd eased the winner right down over the concluding furlong.

Third placegetter Florets ($15-$18-$13) was another two and a quarter lengths behind the runner-up.

“She’s a really nice style of a horse with a good turn of foot,” Kavanagh said of Atlantic Jewel.

The filly is the first to wear the famous Coolmore navy blue colours for Kavanagh.

She was purchased by renowned international bloodstock agent Demi O’Byrne for $320,000 from the Vinery Stud draft at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

O’Bryne, currently in Lexington, got running commentary of the race from his good friend and Magic Millions Victorian Manager Tim Brown.

Winning rider Michael Rodd could almost have been arrested for his ride – almost choking his mount over the concluding stages to reduce a margin which could have been many lengths.

“She’s always shown a bit,” Rodd said. “But she was a bit of a terrier in her early days.”

“She dropped me at trackwork a few times and I told Merv (Harvey, foreman) that I didn’t want to ride her!”

“Physically she’s always been there but mentally she hasn’t.”

“But she has come a long way since her (debut) win at Geelong. From that win she’s really switched on and lost of a lot of her immaturity.”

“She’s got a massive stride on her and has plenty to learn,” Rodd summed up.

A daughter of former outstanding sprinter and now Coolmore Stud based sire Fastnet Rock, Atlantic Jewel looks destined to add to his tally of 19 individual stakes winners.

She is the first named foal for the Melbourne winning Zabeel mare Regard.

Regard in turn is from the English placed Nashwan mare Nanshan – a half sister to three stakes gallopers including Embazzy and Tarfshi and the dam of stakes placed Shaan.

Atlantic Jewel’s third dam Pass the Peace and her daughter Embassy both won the Group One Chevely Park Stakes at Newmarket.
