Underestimation lived up to his name when he upset favourite punters in Friday night’s listed St Albans Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley.
A juvenile son of Al Samer, Underestimation was sent out an $18 pop with the satchel swingers after a pair of unplaced efforts in early season stakes races.
But the Dean Lawson prepared youngster showed he indeed was a highly talented galloper when he raced clear of his rivals to win by three and a quarter lengths.
Long shot filly How Swede It Is was second under Jack Hill, while the winner’s stablemate and fellow Magic Millions purchase Tennessee Wills ran third.
Underestimation was ridden to victory on Friday night by Steven Arnold and the proven big race rider was delighted the colt lived up to the promise he’d shown in trackwork on the racetrack in a feature event.
“I have galloped him a couple of times and trialled him a couple of times and he has shown really nice ability,” Arnold said after the win.
“His first run was a good run at Flemington, then the other day I was disappointed.”
“He raced very green and got intimidated so we were more aggressive today and he showed his true ability,” he added.
Trainer Dean Lawson said a race like the Caulfield Guineas in the spring carnival would be a major goal for Underestimation.
The promising colt was purchased by part owner Scott Cameron for just $52,500 from the draft of Emirates Park at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
Already he’s earned over $66,000 from just three runs and he looks to have a very exciting future.
Underestimation is the second stakes winner for former outstanding Magic Millions graduate and exciting sire Al Samer.
A son of Redoute’s Choice, Al Samer won the Group Three Black Opal Stakes as a two-year-old and has already proven himself as a stakes producing sire through the expoits of his Carbine Club Stakes winning son Mr Chard.
His latest star Underestimation is one of six winners produced the the black type Marscay mare Nawadder.
A three time Melbourne winner and runner-up in the Group Two Kewney Stakes, Nawadder is the dam of the stakes performed Sydney winner Doojah as well as last season’s Flemington Carnival winner Oasis Bloom.
Nawadder in turn is a half sister to the twice stakes winner Lady Purpose as well as the dam of evergreen grey Hadaaf.
Purpose, the Vain dam of Nawadder, was a former outstanding race performer – winning the Silver Shadow Stakes, Reisling Slipper Trial and Sweet Embrace Stakes prior to heading to stud.
