In a dominant performance, the three-year-old filly proved too strong for her seasoned rivals to win by half a length despite a wide run for much of the race.
Already a proven triple Group Two winner, Foxplay sent her residual value soaring when she broke through in today’s Group One.
She carries the famous purple and white starred silks of leading syndication company Star Thoroughbreds and trainer Chris Waller paid tribute to Star’s Denise Martin.
“Denise (Martin) is unbelievable,” Waller said. “She has been the most supportive person you could imagine.”
“She has a great business and she has brought a lot of people to us. She just looks after them like you wouldn’t believe.”
It was a Group One double on the day for Waller following the win of his champion and fellow Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase Winx.
“(Foxplay) has been a very special horse to us. We call her the Winx Junior.”
“There are lots of similarities. She started off with a winning bang and has sort of been a little bit forgotten.”
“She’s had a few hard luck stories go against her and funnily enough has run in the same races as Winx.”
“Winx didn’t win the Oaks and I decided not to run this filly in the Oaks because I still think she has some brilliance and speed – fortunately we got away with it,” Waller added.
Winning rider Kerrin McEvoy heaped praise on the Foxwedge filly for her tenacity to win the feature race for fillies and mares.
“It was a lovely win by this filly,” McEvoy reported. “She’s just done a great job.”
“I wanted to be a bit closer with the lack of speed in the race. I gave her a kick out of the gates and she was much closer than I thought I’d be.”
“I was wide. Full credit to the horse she did a good job. I just had her travelling and she picked up well.”
“We were finishing strongly and I was a happy recipient of a tough little filly. She deserves a Group One – she’s a star,” McEvoy summed up.
A $160,000 purchase for Star Thoroughbreds from the draft of Newgate Farm at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Foxplay has now earned over $1.2 million.
Foxplay as a yearling was entered for the world first Magic Millions Racing Women bonus being wholly owned by females.
In what is a similar story to crack filly Global Glamour, Foxplay wasn’t able to make it to the Magic Millions 2YO Classic but has turned out an incredible money spinner for her jubilant connections.
