A select trio of fillies topped a solid opening session at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale on the Gold Coast today.
A cracking filly by Street Cry led the way when she was sold late in the afternoon for $280,000.
Offered by Sledmere Stud, as agent, the filly was purchased by leading bloodstock agent Bill Mitchell on behalf of Segenhoe Thoroughbreds.
“She’s a really lovely individual and looks a great prospect,” Mitchell said moments after purchasing the star youngster. “We’ve very happy to be able to buy her from her breeder Michael Sissian.”
“We will decide down the track whether we re-offer her as a yearling or retain her to race.”
“The family is one well known with Segenhoe and it is great she will get the chance to continue that tradition,” Mitchell added.
Around five minutes later the sale complex came alive again when the Coolmore Australia filly by Fastnet Rock from Native Song (Lot 201) was offered.
She is headed to Victoria’s BC3 Thoroughbreds operation after being purchased for them by Tony Williams for $260,000.
The bay filly is the fifth foal of the Group Three winning Mellifont mare Native Song, a winner of six races before being retired to stud.
The third filly on the top sellers leaderboard was the Fastnet Rock-Mohegan Sky youngster from Tyreel Stud. She sold to South Africa’s World Wide Bloodstock.
“I’m delighted to buy her,” World Wide’s Andy Williams said. “She’s an outstanding filly.”
“She is well bred, a great individual and one of the picks of the sale,” he added.
The Exceed and Excel-County Mayo colt from Rosari Farm was the top selling colt on the day, selling earlier for $180,000 to New Zealand’s Ascot Farm, the property of Bruce and Maureen Harvey.
“From the first day of inspections on Thursday we really fell in love with him,” Bruce Harvey reported. “He’s the one we wanted.”
“He’s a lovely individual who has been well reared on a farm that is renowned for producing winners.”
“His sire is flying and they are winning everywhere, not only in Australia but also New Zealand and Hong Kong. He will make into a lovely yearling,” Harvey added.
All up today over $4.78 million was traded on 138 weanlings sold. The gross was up on last year’s figure, with the average price of $34,651 also climbing on the corresponding session twelve months ago.
The clearance rate of 83 per cent was outstanding where compared to the 76 per cent of session one in 2012.
“It’s been a very good sale today,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox reported.
“There were buyers and sellers at all levels of the market and we look forward to tomorrow’s session,” he added.
