Exciting youngster Driefontein will be set for January’s $2 million BMW Magic Millions 2YO Classic after an outstanding debut win at Randwick this afternoon.
Starting as the $1.45 favourite, Driefontein was positioned just off the speed for much of the race before unleashing a stunning burst in the straight to reel in the leader and then race away for a three length success.
“It really was a most impressive win,” winning trainer Gai Waterhouse said from Flemington. “She’s done everything right and I couldn’t have been impressed with her today.”
“I’ll most likely give her a little break now and then bring her back with the Magic Millions (2YO Classic) in mind.”
“We’ll find some nice lead up races for her and go from there – but I think she’s a pretty exciting filly.”
“Another exciting Star Thoroughbred filly,” Waterhouse added of the $75,000 Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase by Denise Martin from the draft of Widden Stud.
“I’m really looking forward to the Magic Millions this year. Pure Hustle won last week and he is a real raw talent – his coat hasn’t come through and he did it all on ability.”
“I’ve got at least two outstanding chances and I can’t wait for January.”
Driefontein is a daughter of Coolmore Stud’s sire of the moment Fastnet Rock – a sire who was also today represented by a Group One winner in New Zealand.
And this week his daughters Atlantic Jewel and Mosheen scored seven and nine length victories at Flemington over the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
“He’s wiping the floor at the moment,” Waterhouse said of Fastnet Rock. “Hot for sure!”
Fastnet Rock is well represented by 35 yearlings at January’s 2012 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
Driefontein is from the 100 per cent winner producer Follow Gold – a stakes winner at Flemington at three.
A daughter of Export Price, Follow Gold is a full sister to Export Gold – the dam of Singapore star Forest Gold.
