A colt by Dreamscape has topped the opening session of the Magic Millions Gold Coast Horses in Training Sale this evening.
Hall of Fame horseman John Hawkes went to a cool $310,000 to secure the youngster from the draft of Glenlogan Park.
There was intense interest in the colt after he set an all time record time for a Gold Coast breeze up earlier in the month when he scorched his 200 metre sectional gallop in 9.85 seconds.
A bid of $160,000 was announced before opening offers were called and auctioneer Julian Blaxland immediately announced the colt was “on the market.”
From there the price soared past $200,000 before hitting $300,000 and Hawkes countered with a $310,000 strike.
The colt will be raced by a group of well known racehorse owners and breeders, the majority of which are from Queensland.
“He’s just a natural athlete,” Hawkes said. “He’s a lovely balanced individual.”
“Let’s just hope he can run that quick over 1000 or 1200 metres as he was over 200 metres.”
“He’s had a month off since his breeze up so he’ll head to Sydney and go into work and take it from there,” Hawkes noted.
The colt was one of six two-year-olds to sell for six figure amounts at the auction.
Other colts popular today included youngsters by sires including All American ($155,000), Flying Spur ($140,000), Holy Roman Emperor ($120,000), Real Saga ($110,000) and Exceed and Excel ($100,000).
During the session some 52 lots were sold at a gross of $2,358,000 with an increased average price of $45,346. The clearance rate wound up at a tick over 61 per cent.
“It’s extra satisfying to sell a horse in a two-year-old sale for in excess of $300,000,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox noted.
“It was a good old fashioned bidding war and the colt was bought by one of Australia’s best judges in John Hawkes.”
“We all wish the new connections well with a very exciting colt,” Cox added.
“To see the average climb from last year’s opening session is good, however the clearance rate is poor and is systematic of two-year-old sales the world over.”
“There’s a lot of people in town with money in their hip pockets still looking to buy and we’re hopeful to see some consolidation in the market tomorrow,” he summed up.
The second session of the sale will be held from 10am (Qld time) tomorrow.
