After looking under pressure shortly after turning for home, the champion showed why she is ranked the world’s best racehorse with a stunning sprint over the final 200 metres for another remarkable win.
So fast was she finishing that Winx held a four length margin at the post over the second favourite and triple Group One winner Le Romain, while the champ’s stablemate and fellow Group One winner Egg Tart was third home.
Connections of the champion were again searching for the correct superlatives after she became the first horse in Australian history to win the George Main Stakes on three occasions. She also extended the Australian record for consecutive wins to 27 and extended her world record of Group One wins on the flat, a figure that’s now reached 20.
“It is quite unbelievable and she has some gears and I hope we don’t need to find any more gears but it is very special, not just here at Randwick but around Australia and wherever she races, most importantly on the TV,” an emotional trainer Chris Waller said.
“It keeps going to a new level every time and she is a superstar. I did enjoy the last 100 (metres) today, it was very special.”
Winx now looks set to head to Melbourne with connections to choose between the Turnbull Stakes and Caulfield Stakes as a final Group One lead up to her quest at four straight wins win the WS Cox Plate.
“We will see how she pulls up and we said we would take it one run at a time,” Waller said. “We are thinking about the Cox Plate obviously and the best way is to take it one run at a time.”
“I would say it (her next run) will be in Melbourne but we’ll enjoy today and talk about it next week. It will be no great surprise I am sure but if we do change, it will be for a reason and that reason is the horse comes first.”
“Le Romain ran a hell of a race and at the corner, I didn’t feel in danger, but I didn’t feel like she was going to be as dominant as she usually is but when that turbo kicked into gear at the 250 it was all over,” a proud jockey Hugh Bowman said.
“We’ll be lucky to see another one like her, while I’m alive anyway. I think that is a given.”
“How lucky I am to be involved with such a horse,” Bowman added.
Bred by the Camilleri family’s Fairway Thoroughbreds, Winx was sold to Peter Tighe’s Magic Bloodstock through the draft of Coolmore Stud for $230,000 at the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
Her purchase prize ranks as one of the great value buys in the history of thoroughbreds across the world considering she’s earned $19,582,424 in prizemoney.
The champion daughter of Street Cry is from the stakes winning Al Akbar mare Vegas Showgirl – a mare purchased by Colm Santry for Fairway Thoroughbreds from Dormello Stud at the 2009 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.
