Former champion rodeo rider Norm Hilton continued his remarkable season with stable sprinter Bold Glance today cruising home to win the listed $75,000 Ascot Handicap (1200m) at Eagle Farm.
Hilton, one of Toowoomba’s best known and most astute horsemen, was all smiles in the winner’s stall following the win of his $21,000 bargain buy from the 2007 Magic Millions Premier Yearling Sale at the Gold Coast.
The Sequalo gelding, who was his trainers first ever stakes winner when successful in another listed event a year ago, cruised home to beat fellow Magic Millions graduate Joint Chiefs by two and a quarter lengths.
In all Hilton has won four stakes races – and Chris Munce, who partnered Bold Glance today, won three of them.
“He’s been a good money-spinner for us,” Hilton told AAP.
“We only paid $20,000 for him at the Magic Millions sales during EI.”
“The horse gave me my first Listed win last year when Kristy Banks won on him in the Queensland Day Plate,” he added.
“But I have to say Chris is my favourite jockey. I’ve won three more Listed races since then and Chris has been on them all.”
Hilton said he wasn’t sure what Bold Glance’s future held in relation to upcoming races.
“I’m not sure what’s next for him but he races best with a gap between his runs.”
A graduate of the Kruger family’s Lyndhurst Stud Farm, Bold Glance is a son of their star resident sire Sequalo.
He’s one of 11 good winners to have represented the grand producing Al Ameen mare Flirting Glance – a Sydney two-year-old winner.
As well as Bold Glance she is the dam of the stakes performed (Sahara) Hot Nights, 11 time winner Jenks, Sahara Flirt (7 wins) and Samtheflirt (6 wins).
Meanwhile, the Ascot Handicap wasn’t the only feature race in Queensland today won by a Magic Millions graduate by Sequalo.
Quality Eagle Farm galloper Steel Lips travelled north for Steele Ryan and won the $50,000 Mackay Cup.
A $45,000 Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase, Steel Lips was sent out the favourite and cruised home in a two and a half length win in the 1800 metre feature.
Tony Pattillo was aboard the six-year-old who’s now racked up over $250,000 in earnings.
