Sunsource and Direct swept the two Magic Millions features at Ballarat today and in the process booked tickets to the Gold Coast for Queensland’s richest raceday. |
Sunsource created a big impression when he rattled home for a brilliant win earlier in the day in the $250,000 Magic Millions Ballarat 2YO Classic (1000m). Prepared by Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, Sunsource accelerated brilliantly over the concluding stages for an increasing length and three quarter margin. “He was slow away and obviously you are watching your own horse,” co-trainer Trent Busuttin said. “But you could see at the 600 (metre mark) he was coming up underneath Daniel and even though he was a fair way off them he was looking like he was going to let down.” “In his last trial last Monday he got back and hit the line good. At the 300 I thought he was going to really charge late.” Busuttin said the Zoustar youngster had been a “straight forward” juvenile to prepare for his debut today. “He’s done it good and we’ll certainly pack our bags and get up there (to the Gold Coast). There’s the big flashy Sydney colts (to contend with). We won’t get ahead of ourselves but we’ve got a runner in the race now.” “He’ll definitely has one (more) run, maybe two,” Busuttin said of the Magic Millions preparation. “He’s a big gross colt.” “He’s now in the race with the prizemoney – that takes the pressure off. He can have a little let-up now.” Sunsource was a $370,000 buy for Busuttin Racing and Group One Bloodstock from the draft of Widden Stud. He was bred by successful breeder and owner Robert Anderson. A son of former Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase Zoustar, Sunsource is the second named foal of the Group Three Kevin Hayes Stakes placegetter Patricia Dawn. Patricia Dawn’s other runner, Dawn of an Era, is a three time winner in Japan and is a full brother to Sunsource. Meanwhile, Lloyd Kennewell is chasing another million dollar Magic Millions feature with Direct after the well bred four-year-old won the $175,000 Magic Millions Ballarat 3YO & 4YO Classic. “It turned out perfect,” Kennewell reported. “Zac (Spain, rider) executed my plan perfectly. I couldn’t have asked for anything better really. It was a painless watch.” Direct is unbeaten since a gelding operation with Kennewell saying he’s always shown above average ability. “It’s a shame (having to geld). I thought he was one of the best colts in the sale when I bought him. I paid $400,000 for him. I specked him, I had no owners for him.” “He’s a 20 or 30 million dollar colt if he had won a Group One, but he’s not. Here we are now, everyone’s happy and he’ll be on the float to the Gold Coast.” Kennewell said the Magic Millions Snippets, a race he won with former stable star Viddora, would be an ideal target for the son of Siyouni. Direct was a $400,000 Gold Coast Yearling Sale buy for Kennewell and completed a massive day for co-buyer Mathew Becker of Group One Bloodstock who also co-purchased today’s 2YO Classic winner Sunsource. Direct was bred by Dalanna Bloodstock in partnership with Foxwood Stables. A half sister to Direct by Yes Yes Yes is catalogued as Lot 512 for January’s 2023 Gold Coast Yearling Sale. She is being prepared as part of the Yarraman Park Stud draft. The $11.75 million The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Raceday will be held at the Gold Coast Turf Club on January 14. |
