One of two Magic Millions graduates in the world class field, Boom Time ground down the Gold Coast sold star Single Gaze in a dream result for Australia’s leading thoroughbred auctioneer.
It was a triumph for champion horseman David Hayes, who co-trains the entire with his son Ben and nephew Tom Dabernig, as he owns the former Perth based stayer.
In January Boom Time ran fifth to Stratum Star in the $1 million Magic Millions Trophy and since then has raced consistently in good class races.
At his lead up run to the Caulfield Cup he finished fourth in the Group Two Herbert Power Stakes, when closing again after being on the speed throughout behind Lord Fandango.
A graduate of the Ferrari Racing and Breeding draft at the 2013 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale, Boom Time is by Flying Spur and from a daughter of Magic Millions legend Snippets.
Boom Time is owned solely by David Hayes after he purchased the Cup winner from his good friend Kim Loxton following the Sydney Cup this year.”I thought his (last) run reminded me of Fraar (Lindsay Park’s 1993 Caulfield Cup winner), so we just sort of decided run him and Cory did the rest,” Hayes said.
“What a great result and special thoughts with Kimmy Loxton who had to give the horse up. He is a great friend of mine and we will be having a celebration drink at some stage. He is overseas at the moment.”
“I thought he was a genuine Group Three horse, but he is a Group One one now. I just can’t believe it. Miracles do happen!”
“To do it with my family is just fantastic. To be the only owner is incredible. I do not own many horses. Lots of little ones (shares), but to do it is just fantastic.”
“And for all the boys and team at Lindsay Park, everyone has worked so hard for a result like this and to win a major like this on the new property. Especially my own horse.”
Hayes wasn’t just sure where Boom Time would race next – be was more keen immediately after the race to watch a replay and soak up the victory.
“I will probably sleep with him tonight,” he said with a laugh. “I will have a sit down later and map out a plan for him, but he is entered in everything so the world is our oyster.”
Boom Time’s win was the first at Group One level for former New Zealand based hoop and part times jumps jockey Cory Parish.”I couldn’t ask for any more,” Parish said. “I have been here five years now. I have been working for David, he owns the whole horse now and he had the faith to put me on today.”
“I just wanted to repay him and I have done that. It’s been fantastic.”
“It has just been phenomenal. This horse went super last start in the Herbert Power, he was the only horse to finish off. I thought if he could relax today he would do it and he did just that.”
“It is an amazing thrill. First Group One and for it to be the Caulfield Cup – you beauty’” a beaming Parish added.
Boom Time is the 13th individual Group One winner for Danehill’s Golden Slipper winning son Flying Spur and is from a triple city winning daughter of inaugural Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Snippets.
Dam, Bit of a Ride is a three quarter sister to Scandinavia – the second dam of former champion sprinter Black Caviar.
While Boom Time turned in a career best today, the performance of runner-up Single Gaze was remarkable.
The bonny mare, a $70,000 Gold Coast Yearling Sale buy from Redbank North, hit the front in the home straight and was able to hold out all challengers aside from the winner in a brilliant effort.
Single Gaze’s trainer Nick Olive was very proud of his Group One winning mare, who is likely to now head to the $6 million Melbourne Cup (3200m) next month.
“She’s run an absolute cracker,” a thrilled Olive said. “I’m just so proud of the horse.”
“We celebrated like we won it. The good thing is that now she will head on to the Melbourne Cup all being well and that’s going to be a few more exciting weeks.”
Meanwhile, other Magic Millions graduates to star on Caulfield’s biggest day included Snitty Kitty and Global Glamour who swept Group Two wins.
Snitty Kitty smashed the race record when she donkey-licked her rivals under star young rider Beau Mertens in the Group Two Caulfield Sprint (1000m).
A Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase for trainer Henry Dwyer from Willow Park Stud, Snitty Kitty was already a stakes winner, but today she achieved her best win at her home straight in blazing style.
Dwyer said Snitty Kitty may be sent straight to the paddock to aim at the Oakleigh Plate – with other spring options and the Magic Millions Raceday also chances.
Later in the afternoon the girls were cheering when popular mare Global Glamour scored a tough first up win in the Group Two Tristarc Stakes (1400m).
Prepared by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Global Glamour showed her star qualities to edge out her rivals in a driving finish.
A $65,000 Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase from Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm, Global Glamour is raced by a syndicate of ladies spread around the world – from around seven countries. She was selected for the group by renowned bloodstock agent James Bester.
Connections revealed after the race Global Glamour would run in the Myer Classic before being aimed at the Magic Millions Raceday on January 13. Dreams of a Royal Ascot run next year are also on track.
