Leading trainer Matthew Dunn was the first to strike with the day’s highest price when he purchased Lot 80, the Top Echelon-Idesa Bay colt.
Offered by Oakwood Farm, the bay colt is a half brother to five winners including the group performer Cerberus Gal and hails from the family of Golden Slipper winning sire Danzero.
“The colt is very typical of the nice Top Echelons,” Matthew Dunn said. “He’s a strong, good looking colt.”
The purchase of Lot 80 enabled Dunn to bounce back after he and his good mate and leading bloodstock agent Neil Jenkinson, were underbidders on the Top Echelon half brother to Paradis Imperial who sold for $70,000.
Later in the afternoon leading Melbourne based syndicator Rob Slade went to $150,000 to secure Lot 128, the Written Tycoon-Lou colt from Raheen Stud.
Offered on behalf of Murrulla Stud, the bay or brown colt is from a winning Black Minnaloushe mare and hails from the family of former champion galloper Bonecrusher.
“He’s a nice colt who will continue to furnish being a November foal,” Slade said. “I loved his walk.”
“It’s been very hard to buy a Written Tycoon this year – I’m delighted to have one now to syndicate.”
The other two lots to sell for six figures were both offered by Glenlogan Park – a Show a Heart filly went to Magic Millions Classic winning trainer Toby Edmonds for $105,000 and a filly by Testa Rossa went to the weekend’s Golden Slipper winner Gary Portelli for $100,000.
Throughout the day over $4 million was traded on 137 lots sold at an increased average price of $29,880 and clearance rate of over 74 per cent.
“It’s been a typical start to our March Yearling Sale where the provincial Queensland buyers were tentative to get into the market early,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox said.
“As the day went on they got more confident and were prepared to bid up.”
“As the momentum is building we look forward to a solid day’s trade tomorrow,” Cox added.
