Champion jockey Glen Boss declared Chivalry the “best colt in Victoria” after his stunning first up win in Saturday’s Group Three HFC McNeil Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

Racing for the first time since the Blue Diamond Stakes in late February, Chivalry produced an electrifying burst from the tail of the field to beat a crack field by a head.

The colt prepared by Mark Kavanagh has always shown above average ability with connections knowing they had a serious three-year-old on their hands.

The performance of Chivalry in the McNeil Stakes was first class and according to Boss he’s the horse to beat in the Caulfield Guineas.

“He’s a colt that oozed quality in the autumn but he was very immature,” Boss said. “He had a great physique but he just hadn’t grown into his body yet.”

“Today was the day if he was every going to get beat. He lost it on the corner and didn’t track very well around the bend.”

“Just wait until he gets out to a mile and beyond, he’s got a great constitution and demeanour about him,” Boss said.

Purchased for $280,000 from the Baramul Stud draft at the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Chivalry is being aimed at the sire making Caulfield Guineas by a man who knows a good Street Cry, Mark Kavanagh.

“He’ll be heading towards that race,” Kavanagh confirmed. “His style of racing looks suited to longer distances.”

Like former stable stars Shocking and Whobegotyou, Chivalry is by star sire Street Cry and he is part owned by Laurence Eales – the man behind those other Australian based Street Cry champions.

He is from the former Group Three winning juvenile World Peace, a beautifully bred daughter of Danehill and Light Up the World.

Meanwhile, star mare Gregers is also headed for a group one future following her success in Saturday’s Group Three Cockram Stakes(1200m).

Prepared by Lindsay Park’s David Hayes and Tom Dabernig, Gregers finished too well for A Time for Julia and a closing Commanding Jewel to win the mares feature in great style.

It was the second win from two starts this campaign for the well bred daughter of Commands, a $130,000 purchase from the 2011 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale.

“We’ll consider the Let’s Elope Stakes at Flemington in two weeks, but I really like the idea of heading into the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes with fresh legs,” David Hayes said.

“I don’t think the month between runs will hurt her. There’s always a risk that if you peak in winter that you can be left with nothing when it matters.”

“The Myer Classic is her ultimate goal or we could even switch back to the sprints. I just want to avoid a clash with Lankan Rupee.”

One of 63 individual stakes winners for her sire Commands, Gregers is from the city winning Canny Lad mare Satnav and is therefore a three quarter sister to the group performer and last week’s Melbourne winner Girl Guide.

Satnav is a sister to the Adelaide and Sydney winner Yes She Can Cancan – the dam of Group One winners Ofcourseican and Gimmethegreenlight. The connections of the South African star Gimmethegreenlight were underbidders on Gregers at the Gold Coast.
