Peggy Jean continued the successful run in big races of National Weanling Sale graduates when she won Saturday’s Group One ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes at Randwick.
In becoming the first Group One winner for her sire Myboycharlie as well as Sydney based syndication company Triple Crown, Peggy Jean led home a 1-2 finish for graduates of a Magic Millions sale.
Peggy Jean had to pull out everything to wear down and edge ahead of Paul Perry’s gallant youngster Scratch Me Lucky to win the 1400 metre feature and send her residual broodmare value soaring.
Bred by Tony “Tubba” Williams and his wife Sue in New South Wales, Peggy Jean was originally sold through the Donnybrook Estates draft for $25,000 at the 2012 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale.
The filly caught the eye of leading Melbourne based bloodstock agent Damon Gabbedy and he signed for the filly under his Belmont Bloodstock Agency banner after being re-sold as a yearling Peggy Jean would join the Gerald Ryan stable.
The runner-up Scratch Me Lucky was purchased by Perry for $240,000 through the draft of Turangga Farm at last year’s Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
Peggy Jean is one of three stakes winners for her sire, Danetime’s Prix Morny winning son Myboycharlie.
Before her historic win on Saturday the previous feature winner for the sire was Charlie Boy – a Group Two winner of the Danehill Stakes – another Magic Millions graduate and another syndicate success story for Triple Crown.
Peggy Jean is the first named foal for the unraced Lago Delight mare Lady of Love.
A daughter of the Tasmanian based One Thousand Guineas and Stutt Stakes winner Twig Amour, Lady of Love is a half sister to the nine time winning and South African group performer Prince of Chance.
Peggy Jean’s third dam Food for Love (Lunchtime) won a Magic Night Stakes and was second in a Golden Slipper before retiring to stud. She is the dam of multiple Group One winner and star producing mare Lady Jakeo.
Lady Jakeo is the dam of three stakes performers as well as the Brisbane winner Miss Jakeo, dam of group winners Mrs Onassis, Miss Judgement, Fifth Avenue Lady and Aussies Love Sport.
Peggy Jean isn’t the only recent Sydney juvenile Group One winner to have originated from the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale.
Former champion juvenile Pierro was also sourced from the sale for $115,000 before turning into a multi-million dollar stallion prospect by winning the juvenile triple crown and establishing himself one of the country’s best three-year-olds.
Another smart recent graduate of the sale is Driefontein – winner of the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic.
Yesterday the daughter of Fastnet Rock added another feature race to her record with success in the Group Three RN Irwin Stakes in Adelaide.
Other sale graduates including star sprinter Zoustar and international Group One winners Anabandana, Gimmethegreenlight, Southern Lord, Fighting Warrior and Willow Magic.
The list of feature graduates also takes in the likes of Alpha Miss, Platinum Kingdom, Better Than Ready, Orator’s Daughter, Gregers, Missy Longstocking, Arinosa, Fire Up Fifi, Swiss Ace, Shellscrape and Graceful Anna.
