Magnus Fillies Shine At Adelaide Sale Opener

Fillies by Magnus proved popular during a buoyant opening to the 2014 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale at Morphettville tonight.

Mark Riley paid the night’s top price of $115,000 for the Magnus filly from group winning mare Coniston Gem.

Interest in the filly was strong and it was Riley who outbid the Lindsay Park team to secure the night’s most expensive lot sold.

The bay filly, a Super VOBIS nominated offering, is the fourth foal of the eight time winning Greig mare Coniston Gem.

A winner of over $400,000 on the track, Coniston Gem won three stakes races before being retired to stud.

Another Magnus filly, the sister to recent Group Two runner-up Miss Promiscuity, was also popular and sold for the equal second top price of $110,000.

The fourth foal of the Melbourne winning Distant Music mare Zipstream, the filly was purchased by the Victorian partnership of Bluegrass Bloodstock and Wez Hunter.

Both Magnus fillies were presented at the auction by Eliza Park International, acting as agent for Robert Crabtree’s Dorrington Farm.

Sharing second place on the top sellers list was Balcrest Stud’s Hussonet colt who sold to Queensland based bloodstock agent John Foote for $110,000.

The chestnut colt is the third foal of the five time winning and stakes performed Indian Danehill mare Ambika, a granddaughter of the Goodwood Handicap winner Ambala.

During the night over $2.6 million was traded on 70 lots at an average price of $37,200 – up around 10 per cent on the opening night in 2013.

The clearance rate of 80 per cent was also up compared to the 76 per cent twelve months ago for a slightly smaller offering.

“It’s been a great start to the Adelaide Yearling Sale,” Magic Millions Adelaide based consultant Adrian Hancock said. “The local buyers have been outstanding.”

“We had buyers from every mainland state as well as Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.”

“It was a very bouyant opening to Book One and we look forward to tomorrow’s Day Two catalogue,” Hancock added.
