Demand for quality from an outstanding international buying bench produced an outstanding first day of selling at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale today.
After a long session which concluded this evening almost $17 million was traded on 200 lots at an outstanding clearance rate of over 85 per cent.
Nechita and Endless led the way when selling for $1.55 million and $1.05 million respectively on a spirited day’s selling.
An outstanding Unreserved Reduction draft from Patinack Farm highlighted a day in which bids flew from all corners of the sales complex.
Nechita topped the session when she was knocked down to Coolmore’s Tom Magnier for $1.55 million.
Magnier said the last start Group One winner, fittingly of the Coolmore Stud Stakes, had run her last race.
“She will be retired to stud and she will visit Pierro if she stays in Australia, or if she heads to Europe she will be served by Galileo.”
“We will make a decision when the dust settles and go from there.”
“She’s a lovely filly, by a champion stallion and we’re delighted to have her joining a quality Coolmore Stud band of broodmares,” Magnier added.
The second highest price for the day was the $1.05 million by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, bidding through his Melbourne based bloodstock agent Tim Stakemire for the superbly bred mare Endless.
Endless, in foal to Husson, is a half sister to Kind, the stakes performed dam of many stars including world champion racehorse Frankel.
“I don’t think mares with that pedigree come onto the market every day of the week and I’m not sure what we will do yet.”
“I will speak to Sheikh Mohammed and she might be sent to the Northern Hemisphere, she might stay here.”
Earlier in the afternoon Group Two winning filly Longport was purchased by Brisbane based horseman Danny Bougoure for $800,000.
Bougoure, best known for training former star globetrotting sprinter Falvelon, said he was excited to have such a high quality race filly joining his stable.
Longport, twice a Group One runner-up, won the Group Two Tea Rose Stakes and looks a great racing and breeding prospect for the future.
Other star Patinack Farm fillies and mares to sell well included Saturday’s Group Three winner Sookie ($700,000 to Gai Waterhouse Racing/James Harron B’stock), Group One winner Pear Tart ($675,000 to BBA Ireland) and Group Three winner Pane in the Glass ($500,000 to SF Bloodstock).
BBA Ireland’s Adrian Nicoll said the purchase of Pear Tart was a landmark event in the Australian industry for the famed Niarchos family.
“Pear Tart has been bought by the Niarchos family in France in partnership with Coolmore. She stays in Australia and they have never had mares in Australia before, so this is their first venture,” Nicoll said.
“They own the grandam so they know the family well. She is a Group One winner and she is likely to go to Pierro next year and then Fastnet Rock.”
Today’s session boasted an outstanding clearance rate of 85 percent – well up on the 68 per cent achieved at the opening session last year.
The gross leapt 110 per cent and the average soared 51 per cent on last year’s first session.
“You could describe today as an epic day’s selling,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox stated.
“It will be long remembered by those here and all in the industry – it was a great day and a great result.”
“Obviously the Patinack Farm horses were a highlight and congratulations to Nathan Tinkler and his team for a great result.”
“Patinack horses aside, the market was very strong at all levels,” he added.
Cox said there were some top class breeding prospects to go through the ring tomorrow during the second session of the auction from 10am.
