Fastnet Rock’s domination at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale continued tonight when one of his fillies topped the fourth session.
Offered by Tyreel Stud on behalf of Victoria’s Makybe operation, the filly is from the well bred and stakes performed mare Gold Chant.
After a fierce struggle between two of the country’s leading trainers it was Chris Waller who outbid Peter Moody with a successful $500,000 bid.
Waller, who earlier in the day won the $400,000 Oracle Magic Millions Cup with Triple Elegance, was delighted to snare the prized filly.
“She’s a very, very nice horse,” he said. “There is Fastnet Rock over a speed mare and Starspangledbanner sticks out (in the pedigree).”
“These pedigrees are hard to get and you have to pay more to get into them.”
Waller had a good time buying quality during the session – he also signed for the
Redoute’s Choice colt from I Got Chills for $400,000.
Ingordo Bloodstock went to $460,000 to secure the Redoute’s Choice colt from the Encosta de Lago mare Hades, while Duncan Ramage signed for the Fastnet Rock-Hides filly at $390,000.
Tonight’s session, which wrapped up the Session 1-4 auction, helped push the sale gross to over $67.67 million – well up on last year’s figure of $62.57 million.
The average price of $136,172 also had a healthy increase when compared to the $127,175 achieved twelve months ago.
The clearance rate continued to rise and rounded out at the sale conclusion at 83 per cent.
“It’s been an extremely strong sale,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox said. “It was pleasing to see the clearance rate climb again.”
“Tonight’s session was very strong and from a catalogue of just 90 lots, for the average to rise again from yesterday is terrific.”
“It was great to see the support of many newer players – both as vendors and buyers,” Cox added.
The leading buyer for the sale was the powerful partnership of Gai Waterhouse and James Harron – signing for 27 yearlings at a spend of over $6 million.
Another 21 lots heading to the Waterhouse stable will be the outstanding selection of purchases from Denise Martin of Star Thoroughbreds. The spend of over $2 million left Star second on the buyers table.
American based Ingordo Bloodstock, the Hong Kong Jockey Club and Melbourne’s Peter Moody rounded out the leading buyers top five for total spend.
The selling at the Magic Millions Sales Complex will continue tomorrow when the popular Session Five sale will be held.
