Lucky Hussler booked a place in the field for next month’s $1 million Gold Coast Magic Millions 3YO Guineas with a narrow upset win in the Group Three $150,000 Vo Rogue Plate (1350m) at Doomben on Saturday.
In lowering the colours of Group One winning colt Sizzling, Lucky Hussler won his connections $96,000 and importantly shot him up the order of entry and a guaranteed place in the field for the feature three-year-old contest.
A close relation to former Australian Horse of the Year Weekend Hussler, Lucky Hussler was purchased by connections for $100,000 from the Monarch Stud draft at the 2011 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
Prepared at the Gold Coast by Kent Fleming, Lucky Hussler enhanced his impressive race record to three wins and second placings from just six starts and earnings of over $145,000.
Fleming said he couldn’t wait to get Lucky Hussler back to his home track for the $1 million Gold Coast Magic Millions 3YO Guineas.
“The extra journey in a high pressure race at the Gold Coast will suit him down to the ground,” Fleming told AAP after the race.
“This is the best horse I’ve trained and he’s only going to get better when he gets over more ground.”
Fleming praised under rated jockey Matthew Palmer for his first class ride aboard the stable star.
“He rode him just the way I wanted and when the split came in the straight it was just like poetry in motion.”
Palmer, like Fleming, is counting down the sleeps until the million dollar feature at the Gold Coast.
“He still does a few things wrong and is still learning to get his action together but he’s very genuine and is still on the way up.”
“I know how much improvement there’s still left in him and it’s very exciting to be associated with a horse like this,” Palmer added.
The third Australian stakes winner for Patinack Farm based sire Husson, Lucky Hussler is from the Adelaide winning Black Hawk mare Talaq Dancer.
Prepared to her city win by Tom Dabernig, Talaq Dancer is a half sister to Ross McDonald’s former champion galloper, 12 time winner Weekend Hussler.
Winner of seven Group One races, Weekend Hussler is of course by Hussonet, the sire of Lucky Hussler’s sire Husson.
Talaq Dancer is from Weekend Beauty an unraced Helissio half sister to group winners Phantom Thief and Saturday Fever.
Lucky Hussler’s third dam Not on Friday, a daughter of At Talaq, won a Group Three Angus Armanasco Stakes and was third in two group ones – the Thousand Guineas and South Australian Oaks. She was also fourth in the VRC Oaks.
