Western Australia has an uncanny knack of unearthing star gallopers and their latest appears to be untapped four-year-old Luckygray.
The outstanding son of Bradbury’s Luck was sent out the $1.50 favourite in Saturday’s Group Three Asian Beau Stakes (1400m) at Ascot and he didn’t let his supporters down, crusing home to win by over three lengths.
The performance was a sensational one – coming from last on the corner to reel in the entire field and win, racing away under leading Perth based hoop Shaun O’Donnell.
Luckygray boasts the first class record of six wins from just eight starts and now his trainer Gino Poletti is eyeing off the state’s richest race, the $1 million Railway Stakes, with his stable star.
“I couldn’t believe the price,” Poletti said referring to his $1.50 quote. “But he’s the punters horse and good luck to them.”
“I said to Shaun (O’Donnell), you’ll have to ride him quiet – because in small fields you’re likely to get caught wide.”
“Everything went to plan and I wanted him to hit the line strong as he’s being aimed at the Railway and that would be his next run in three weeks time.”
“He’s an immature horse and you don’t over race these horses and hopefully they come back year in, year out bigger and stronger.”
Poletti purchased Luckygray from the draft of Riverslea Farm at the 2009 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale for $46,000.
As it stands he’s already earned $248,225 and the best looks still to come for the exciting grey gelding.
The second stakes winner for former Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Bradbury’s Luck, Luckygray is the first runner for his dam, the four time winner Damah Lady.
A daughter of Mukaddamah, Damah Lady is a half sister to former outstanding juvenile Diego Garcia – a quality sprinter who was later known as Express Win in Hong Kong.
