Exciting young Western Australian based sire Flying Pegasus notched his maiden stakes winner at Ascot on Saturday when quality colt King Saul easily won the listed Belgravia Stakes (1200m).

Sent out a $5 chance with bookmakers after an impressive city win at his only previous racing preparation, King Saul was able to race clear late and beat Flying Affair by a length and a quarter.

Winning trainer Trevor Andrews said there were moments over the concluding stages when he was feeling a little anxious.

“Shaun gave him a really good ride,” Andrews said. “He’s quite casual this horse.”

“He travelled up to a nice spot. At the furlong he copped a little bit of a bump and lost a bit of ground and I thought – he’s down and out here.”

“But to his credit he didn’t. He’s quite scary this horse – he’s a bit bottomless – we’ve never put him to the test.”

“He’s done everything pretty easy. Credit to the horse for picking himself up and winning as soft as it was. It was quite an arrogant win in the end.”

Andrews said he was pleased with how the Flying Pegasus breed were going in his yard and was delighted that King Saul was able to be his milestone stakes winner.

“He’s from the first crop of Flying Pegasus and he’s out of a Zabeel mare. The Flying Pegs showed something early, but I think they will show more as three-year-olds.”

“You’d think a mile and further is his go,” Andrews said of King Saul. “He’s got a really relaxed attitude.”

“There’s plenty of upside with this horse with the Fairetha (Stakes) and (WA) Guineas with him.”

King Saul, a graduate of Namerik Thoroughbreds, was purchased by Mount Hallowell Stud for $120,000 at last year’s Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale.

The highly admired youngster is raced by Craig Thompson’s Mount Hallowell Syndicate and Marty Young.

From just two runs he’s already earned over $100,000 and he looks to be one of the more exciting young gallopers in the state.

King Saul is one of two winners, from two to race, for the winning Zabeel mare Zenda.

Zenda is a half sister to the New Zealand based stakes winners Pins ‘n’ Needles and Coup Fieldes.

The next crop of Flying Pegasus youngsters will go under the hammer at February’s 2012 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale.
