Bart Cummings staked his claim for next month’s Victoria Oaks this afternoon when rising staying talent Gliding raced away with the listed Ethereal Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield.
A beautifully related daughter of Flying Spur, Gliding enjoyed a lovely run throughout and cruised home under superstar rider Darren Beadman to win by a length and a half.
Gliding is no doubt one of Cummings’ favourites considering he selected her as a yearling at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and went to $280,000 to buy he. He owns the filly outright.
He was not surprisingly a happy man after the race and particularly pleased that the filly was ridden to victory by the now Hong Kong based Beadman.
“I was pleased to get a winner for him,” the ever witty Cummings said after the race.
“She could go onto the Oaks now. Hopefully the Wakeful Stakes into the Oaks.”
“I just think the way she went today, she finished off quite well. Her pedigree indiciates it as well.”
Cummings said the ride from Beadman was first class.
“I thought he’d be running about third of fourth and if he got off the fence around the turn he’d have a good chance of winning.”
“And as it turned out, perfect!”
Beadman was all smiles after the race and said it was nice to be back in Australia and donning the silks of the Cups king.
“It was nice to throw on the green and gold – it made me feel at home,” Beadman said.
“She put herself into the race and travelled pretty kindly in the run and when I let her down she quickened nice.”
“It was a pretty soft win really. She’ll run a mile and a half for sure,” the champion rider summed up.
Gliding is the second stakes winner from five to race for the stakes performed Marscay mare Marrego.
Second in a Group Two Silver Slipper Stakes and listed Reginald Allen Handicap, Marrego is best known these days as the dam of the former outstanding Sydney based galloper Eremein.
Eremein won 12 races and earned over $4.2 million during an illustrious career that netted victories in a BMW Stakes, AJC Derby, Rosehill Guineas, Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Ranvet Stakes.
Gliding is the 84th individual stakes winner for Arrowfield Stud’s top sire Flying Spur – a Golden Slipper winning son of Danehill.
