When Noel Doyle first inspected Biggles at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale he was extremely impressed and just had to buy the youngster.
Through leading Sydney based bloodstock agent Kieran Moore, the Doyle stable was able to snap up the youngster for $160,000.
The Jet Spur youngster looked a bright prospect for the future when he made it back to back wins in the Hamilton Hotel Handicap (1500m) at Eagle Farm this afternoon.
Despite having to cross from an outside barrier, Biggles ($4.60) was able to find a strong kick in the straight to race away and beat Peppered Black ($31) by two and a quarter lengths.
Denwood ($6) caught the eye, finishing well down the outside of the track for third, a further half neck back.
The result was a perfect result for Magic Millions graduates – all three placegetters sold through the Gold Coast sale ring at Bundall.
While a number of youngsters impressed in the race, it was Biggles who proved much too strong and the win justified the faith placed in the judgement of connections back at the sales.
“We ended up in a bidding duel with trainers Paul Messara and Chris Waller for him. Luckily we got the last bid in at $160,000,” Doyle told AAP.
Biggles showed ability right from the time he was first tested on the training track, but being a “boy” was taking his mind off his job as a racehorse.
Doyle sent Biggles to be gelded and have a break and since that he’s raced on three occasions for two wins.
“Let’s just say they were very big and they were getting in the way. In was an easy decision to geld him and it has proved the correct one.”
Connections were extremely confident after Biggles showed great ability in his work since winning at his previous run at Ipswich.
“The way he worked during the week I thought it would take a good horse to beat him. I know he had 57kg today and an outside alley but he had worked so well we were very confident.”
Winning rider Jim Byrne predicts more improvement from Biggles as he matures into a three-year-old next season.
“He is still a bit stilted in his action and will get better with more racing,” Byrne told AAP.
Biggles is a son of Glenlogan Park based sire Jet Spur – a former smart group winning son of Flying Spur.
With just two crops to the track so far, Biggles already has 48 winners including the stakes gallopers Belle d’Amour, Equissential and Flying Jet.
Biggles is one of seven good winners produced by the lightly raced Last Tycoon mare Be Faithful.
The 100 per cent winner producer is also responsible for the city winners Viva Vettori, Miss Jones and Snatch It as well as four time Singapore winner Old Faithful.
