Beautifully related filly Mickelberg continued the red hot run for trainer Chris Waller when she led home a stable quinella and Magic Millions trifecta result in today’s Ascot Club 2YO Plate (1200m) at Canterbury.
A daughter of Hussonet and the top producing mare Trail of Gold, Mickelberg lived up to her pedigree and her good looks when she overcame an unsuitable wet track to win in great style.
The win is the 103rd for the season in Sydney for leading Rosehill based trainer Chris Waller.
“She’s been knocking on the door and run into some wet tracks and I thought even today the track might have been a bit wet for her,” Waller said of Mickelberg.
“Fortunately it wasn’t (too wet) and she got through it okay. Maybe first use of the track helped as well.”
Waller was also pleased with the effort of Ingham Magic who boxed on strongly after working hard during the early stages of the race from a wide barrier.
“The other horse had to do a bit of work. Glyn tried to get across as easy as he could – he got caught four wide so he had to keep pushing forward.”
“That just brought her undone over the concluding stages, but there’s a good win in the second horse.”
In form apprentice Jason Collett rode the winner and was impressed with Mickelberg’s acceleration when asked over the concluding stages.
“We got into the right spot and once she got the run at the top of the straight it was a good win,” Collett reported.
“She wanted to lay out a bit. I was going to go for the (whip in the) left hand but I just rode her out hands and heels and she slowly got the better of Chris’ other filly.”
Mickelberg, a full sister to the Group One Railway Handicap winner Gold Trail, was purchased by the recently appointed Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox for $330,000 from last year’s Gold Coast Yearling Sale. She is raced by the Clancy family.
The filly is a product of Queensland’s top thoroughbred nursery Furlong Stud and she is the fifth winner from five to race for her dam.
At the post Mickelberg ($6-$7) held a length and a quarter margin over the runner up and stablemate Ingham Magic ($3.60-$4.40-$4.20 fav).
Eremein’s half sister debuting for Bart Cummings, Gliding ($4.60-$6.50) made great late ground to run third, a further long neck back in a “follow me” style effort.
The result was a perfect one for graduates of Australia’s number one producing thoroughbred sales company, Magic Millions.
The runner-up, a daughter of Magic Albert, was purchased by the Ingham Racing team for $110,000 from the draft of Yarraman Park (as agent).
Gliding, by Flying Spur and from the top producer Marrego, was purchased by her sole owner and trainer Bart Cummings for $280,000 from the Orange Grove Thoroughbreds draft.
All three placegetters in the race graduate from the same sale – last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
