Gai Waterhouse continued her buying spree at the Gold Coast today clinching the session’s top seller on day three of the Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
Having already snapped up yesterday’s top seller, the Encosta de Lago-Ha Ha filly purchased by Mount Hallowell Stud, the famous horsewoman was back at it again.
This time she bid to $620,000 on behalf of a team of owners who successfully raced Golden Slipper winning colt Sebring.
“He’s one of the most attractive horses in the sale,” Waterhouse said. “I thought he was just lovely.”
“I actually wrote in my catalogue – sexy!”
“The main group (for the horse), the Henderson boys, had said to me – identify a few colts at the sale that we should be investing in.”
“He was one of them and the More Than Ready that went through before was another.” (He was purchased by Star Thoroughbreds).
“We also bought some yesterday and we’ve still got some ammunition there.”
“He looks great value. There’s no doubt a few years ago he would have made a lot more.”
“It’s a great time to be buying horses – especially as the prizemoney keeps going up.”
Waterhouse is the leading buyer, by spend, at the sale having signed for 13 youngsters for a tick over $2.72 million.
Her good friend, leading Sydney based syndicator Denise Martin, buying under her Star Thoroughbreds banner, has also snapped up 11 for $1.575 million.
With three sessions of the sale completed over $56.3 million had been traded on 438 youngsters at an average price of $128,551.
The clearance rate continues to rise and is now over 80 per cent.
“The sale continues to improve and I’m particularly thrilled with the clearance rate growth over the last couple of days,” Magic Millions Managing Director David Chester said.
“There has been plenty of good competition on a number of the lots – but I still think buyers are getting exceptional value.”
“Tomorrow night’s session should continue the trend. We’ve got some lovely prospects to go under the hammer.”
“I’m hoping the figures continue to improve again and we finish on a high in preparation for the fifth session on Sunday.”
Chester said his team was very much looking forward to Queensland’s premier race meeting at the Gold Coast tomorrow.
“It’s going to be a wonderful day. There are 10 races on the card with $4.6 million in prizemoney – this is money that will be won by Magic Millions clients.”
“According to prizemoney we’ve got the best ever fields for our three major races of the day – this is a glowing endorsement of our exclusive raceday.”
The first race tomorrow jumps at 11.40am (Qld time) with the sale action kicking away at 6pm.
