Lonhro’s winning run continued at Doomben today when his promising juvenile Spinhro won the in the Sky Racing 2YO Handicap (1010m).
On the speed throughout under Jason Taylor, Spinhro got going late in the straight to reel in the leaders and win impressively.
The colt was sent out one of the leading chances after an eye catching debut when sixth, beaten just two lengths by the likely type Noisy Ocean.
Spinhro was purchased by his trainer Norm Stephens for $81,000 from the Robyn Wise draft at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
He led home a trifecta result for Magic Millions graduates with the minor placegetters Slysera ($40,000 QTIS 600 Yearling Sale) and Punch On ($16,000 QTIS 600 Yearling Sale) also sold at the Gold Coast.
The runner-up Slysera, a youngster by Hidden Dragon, is trained by Ron Macrae at Toowoomba and won’t be a maiden long after an impressive debut.
The winner’s sire Lonhro, who won a staggering 26 races during an illustrious racing career, is one of the country’s hottest sires.
A resident of Darley, Lonhro is the sire of stars including Denman, O’Lonhro, Renaissance, Beaded, Trim, Parables, Deer Valley and Dysphonia.
Spinhro is the first winner for the 1400 metre New Zealand winner Comeinspina.
A daughter of Spinning World, Comeinspina is a half sister to the Group Three winner and Group One placegetter Groundless Threats.
Further back it is the same family as star kiwi based Group One winners La Mer and Zepherin and South African star Timber Trader.
Meanwhile, Demanding Miss continued the winning run for Mitchell Wood when she steamed home to win the Sky Racing Handicap (1615m) around half an hour later.
A three-year-old daughter of Commands, Demanding Miss was having her second start since finishing ninth in the $1 million Gold Coast Magic Millions Guineas last month.
Prepared by Barry Baldwin, Demanding Miss was purchased for $50,000 from the draft of Widden Stud at the 2009 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
A winner of three races and six minor placings from just 15 starts she has earned over $325,000.
