Hot Butterfly confirmed her status as one of the rising stars on the Malaysian racing circuit with a brilliant win in today’s Group Three RM2 million Malaysian 2010 Magic Millions Classic (1200m) at Kuala Lumpur.
A daughter of Fastnet Rock, Hot Butterfly made it four straight wins and her first from a break in the Classic.
A $100,000 purchase from the 2008 Magic Millions National Horses in Training Sale at the Gold Coast, Hot Butterfly is trained by Kevin Coetzee.
The well bred galloper was selected by renowned Perth horseman Joe Byrne from the draft of Bellagio Lodge and purchased her for good friend and client Richard Beh.
“It was a fitting result – Mr Beh is the biggest Malaysian based buyer we have,” Magic Millions International Director David Chester said.
“He’s been a buyer with us for at least 10 years and Hot Butterfly looks to be his latest star galloper.”
Chester was at the pin-up Penang Turf Club meeting in Kuala Lumpur to present the winners with their trophies today.
In the run to the line Hot Butterfly held a two and a half length margin over the Singapore visitor Alacarte (Noel Callow), while Royal Lawyer (Daniel Moor) was another neck back in third place.
The runner-up Alacarte is trained by Steven Burridge, who just over half an hour earlier won the Gold Cup with Risky Business, for Masatsugu Otani.
“It was a good day for Mr Otani – but it could have been so much better as well. Earlier in the day his horse Intencion was narrowly beaten in Melbourne,” Chester reported.
Hot Butterfly is by Coolmore Stud’s top Danehill sire Fastnet Rock and is from the Sydney stakes winning mare Laguna Lake.
A daughter of Odyle, Laguna Lake won three races and earned $145,000 prior to being retired to stud.
Her three runners to date are all winners – two of them are black type performers. The other is the group performed Sydney winner Beaucoup.
Laguna Lake is a half sister to five winners including the Fernhill Handicap and Frank Underwood Cup winner Yes Boss.
