“Pin-Hookers” who have purchased yearlings from the annual Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale in the past have often received significant returns on their original investment – and the 2010 Tasmanian Sale has continued this trend.
While Pin-Hookers were not overly active at the 2010 sale, those who did purchase yearlings for on-sale, have already returned substantial profits on their original investments.
While there were only three horses represented at the recent National Horses in Training Sale on the Gold Coast, that were purchased from Tasmania in February, all three returned significant profits for their new owners.
Alva Stud, a prominent vendor at the annual sale, accounted for two of these horses, namely;
Lot 36, a colt by Untouchable x Remount was sold for $6,500 in Launceston – it then realised $60,000 for the new owners at the horses in training sale.
Lot 356, a colt by star Tasmanian sire West Quest x Migration was sold for just $3,500 in Launceston and realised $36,000 for its new owners at the same sale.
In addition, Grenville Stud originally offered Lot 368 for $6,000 at the Tasmanian sale, a colt by Untouchable, which was then sold for $53,000 on the Gold Coast.
As a rule, due to the local climate, Tasmanian yearlings tend to mature slightly later than their interstate counterparts. However those purchasers with a good eye for how a yearling will develop in the future, have a great opportunity to purchase a bargain from the 2011 Tasmanian sale.
These results are also a strong endorsement for Alva Stud. Catherine Hills, proprietor of Alva Stud said the quality of Tasmanian bred horses should not be underestimated.
“The fact that these horses have been able to cope with the demands of being prepared for a ready to run sale, and to also bring good money, proves we are able to breed tough and durable horses,” she said.
It also worth noting that Alva Stud also bred and reared Capone, the 2009/10 Tasmanian 2yo of the Year. Capone had plenty of racing as a 2yo, and continued to race as well as at the end of the season, as he was at the start.
The 2011 Tasmanian yearling sale will be held in Launceston on Tuesday 22 February, the day prior to the Launceston Cup. Interstate buyers looking to attend this sale should contact Brett Williams at Tasbreeders (0419 334 307) or Tony Williams at Magic Millions on (0428 932 663).
