More Than Ready’s winning week continued at Canterbury today when his promising filly April in Venice scored in great style.
Sent out the heavily backed favourite by punters, April in Venice showed good acceleration in the straight to establish a winning break and then cruise home.
A Baramul Stud graduate, April in Venice was purchased by her trainer Gai Waterhouse for $180,000 at the 2009 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
Waterhouse’s assistant trainer Tania Rouse was impressed with the sprint the filly showed when called upon over the concluding stages.
“It was a nice performance,” Rouse said.
“She was beautifully rated by Nash in front and she kicked away nicely at the top of the straight.”
“She’s still improving both physically and mentally. She’s a filly that Gai has always liked so hopefully she can go on with it from here.”
Winning rider Nash Rawiller backed up Rouse’s comments by suggesting the filly would continue to improve as she gains more experience.
“She’s been a filly that’s always shown us plenty of ability and today she’s lived up to it.”
“She doesn’t know how to lower her head and let down yet – but I’m sure it will come with time,” Rawiller added.
April in Venice, by the same sire as Saturday’s Gimcrack Stakes winner Defiant Dame, is from the Sydney winning and beautifully related Danehill mare Wandane.
A daughter of the group performed Sir Tristram mare Iwan, Wandane is a three quarter sister to the stakes winning stallion Springsteen.
She is also a half sister to Sydney winning dam of the Gosford Guineas winner and Group One placegetter Latin News.
It is the same family as influential sire and Golden Slipper winner Marauding and fellow stakes winners Voodoo Beat and Biscalowe.
