New Venture Shows Plenty Of Heart

New Venture, a daughter of leading Queensland sire Show a Heart, looked a bright prospect for the future when she scored a top win in the Tatts Group Handicap (1600m) at Moonee Valley on Friday night.

Despite having to make a long sustained run under Michael McDonald, New Venture found enough in the straight to hold out her rivals and win impressively.

Trainer Dean Binaisse said the $27,000 Magic Millions National Horses in Training Sale graduate was one of the toughest he’d ever dealt with.

“She’s had her share of problems and taken a bit of time, but she’s pretty tough that’s for sure,”  he said.

“It was a good, tough win and she’s a filly on the way up.”

Things didn’t quite go to plan early on for the filly when at two she debuted with an inglorious 10th at Benalla.

“We thought she would go well that day and she went like a camel.”

“But we’ve been able to work through her problems and she’s putting it all together now.”

“She used to be a mad bolter and she’s a windsucker – but she can gallop and that’s the most important thing.”

Winning rider Michael McDonald said his ride may have not been the best, but he was thrilled with how his mount went to the line.

“She’s still learning what it’s all about,” McDonald commented. “She’s got some developing to come and she’s heading in the right direction.”

“She did a really good job and was strong right to the line.”

McDonald said the filly didn’t mind being off the speed early, but when the pace dropped mid race “she really wanted to get going.”

“I think she’s going to get out to 2000 (metres) later on. I like her a lot.”

At the post New Venture ($4.40-$5-$4.80) was able to hold on and beat Winged Charm ($4.20-$6) by a half neck.

A further length and a quarter back in third place was the long shot Ipioga ($26-$41).

New Venture is by Glenlogan Park’s leading sire Show a Heart – the sire of recent impressive Melbourne debut two-year-old winner Toorak Toff.

He is also the sire of Perth’s most progressive galloper, the Adam Durrant trained Golden Heart.
